Climate change and global warming are on everyone’s minds nowadays, and federal legislation to create a cap and trade system for greenhouse gases has been introduced into Congress.
The Obama Administration continues to demonstrate its commitment to greenhouse gas emissions regulation, evidenced by EPA’s recent endangerment finding stating that greenhouse gases pose a threat to “health and welfare.” On the international front, countries are preparing for climate discussions in Copenhagen this December. Regionally, efforts such as the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI) in the northeast and the Western Climate Initiative (WCI) are underway.
With so many developments occurring at once, it’s difficult for business and industry leaders to determine current and future compliance requirements. Regulated entities should understand the policies driving these developments so that they are prepared for future regulation. Even the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) voted to require insurers to submit annual “climate risk” reports regarding their own operations and those of their insureds.
