Recently a number of states have dramatically altered the traditional concept of a leave of absence by enacting statutes allowing for the taking of leaves of absence in increments as short as 1 hour. The authorized reasons for taking such a leave typically include “small necessities,” such as attending parent-teacher conferences and other school activities, bringing children to medical or dental appointments, or accompanying elderly relatives to their medical or dental appointments.
