2010 Immigration Law Update: What You Need to Know Now to Comply - From I-9s to E-Verify

Immigration Law Webinar - December 4

2010 promises to be a very challenging year for employers dealing with immigration issues:
  • The new 2009 version of the federal I-9 form continues to raise many questions, from the types of ID documents employees may submit to the deadline for employers to complete I-9s for new hires.
  • Complaints abound regarding the E-Verify system that's now required for federal contractors (and recommended for all employers) - from "false positives" that incorrectly flag legal workers to legal worries about the system's photo screening tool.
  • Federal inspectors have turbo-charged their audits of employers' immigration records - and these agents have new guidelines directing them to pursue employers rather than illegal workers in their investigations
  • After a long court battle, the U.S. Homeland Security Department just dropped its controversial “no match” rule that once required employers to fire workers whose Social Security numbers didn’t match government records.

Confused yet? A little scared, even?

It's no wonder. Get the scoop on December 4, when our two experts - both experienced immigration attorneys who work with employers around the country - will sort out what's what and explain exactly what you need to do now to make sure you're in compliance next year and reduce your legal risks down the line.

You and your colleagues will learn:

  • What's going on with the current I-9 form - and how you can avoid the most common mistakes employers are still making with it
  • Best practices for "bulletproofing" your I-9 procedures - from filling out, verifying, filing, and destroying the forms to auditing your I-9s and dealing with workers who refuse to submit them
  • The latest updates on E-Verify, including tips for handling "tentative non-confirmations" properly and giving your employees notice that you're using the system
  • Practical guidelines for avoiding the most common bias claims related to immigration issues
  • How you should handle federal and state immigration records requests, audits, and on-site inspections
  • What's in store for immigration issues in 2010 and beyond - and how you can get ready right now for what may be coming
